Carer’s Assessments

All carers have a legal right to an assessment of their own needs if they are looking after a relative or friend who cannot manage without their help.

A carer’s assessment is an opportunity to let the local social services department know about the things that could make caring easier for you and help balance caring with other aspects, such as work or family.

You have the right to ask for a carer’s assessment whether not you live with the person you support.

You should be offered an assessment as soon as you have been identified as a carer. If not, you can ask your local authority for an appointment or, in Northern Ireland, your local health and social care trust or, in Scotland the social work department of the local council.

Our helpline can provide you with contact details for your local authority.

“I spoke to you on several occasions and genuinely do not know how I would have coped at the time without you. You were always supportive, informative and helped steer me through a very difficult time for my husband and me.”
